Our History
Trinity Church as we know it today is the result of the merging of two congregations - the Evangelical United Brethren and the First Congregational Church. The Evangelical United Brethren Church was founded in 1869 and located at the corner of Colfax and Grove Streets. The First Congregational Church was founded in 1879 and located at the corner of Park and Lincoln Streets. Trinity was founded in 1959 and the present building was dedicated in 1969.
Trinity Church, as we know it today is a federated Church, associated with the United Methodist and United Church of Christ denominations. The two churches have been associated with the earliest history of West Point. When the churches were organized, West Point was a little frontier town, with typical frontier conditions. The railway extended but 10 miles beyond it.
The United Methodist began here as an Evangelical Church, the first in Nebraska. It was incorporate June 10, 1869 and was the first church in West Point. The building was erected in 1871 of hand made brick, donated by John Neligh. The building had two entrances, one for men and one for women with a continuous division in the center, separating men and women during worship. German was spoken in the church until about 1920. A national merger in 1946 combined the Evangelical and United Brethren Churches and in 1968 the Evangelical United Brethren Church merged with the Methodist Church. It is know today as the United Methodist Church.
The United Church of Christ began here as the Congregational Church, being incorporated January 22, 1879. The West Point building was dedicated on October 10, 1880 and is still standing at the corner of Park and Lincoln Streets. 1958 brought a National merger with the Congregational Christian, Evangelical and Reformed Churches, which is now known as the United Church of Christ.
The two West Point churches then merged in 1957 and Trinity Church was incorporated in January 1958. Our current building which we now occupy, was erected and dedicated in February 1969
